L98 Patrol Stage 2: Torque-focused build for off-road work

The L98 diesel Patrol isn't known for setting hearts racing, but this Stage 2 file shows what's possible when you address fuelling and boost control properly. The workshop fitted a high-pressure fuel pump, upgraded injectors, boost solenoids, wastegate control, and optimised the drive-by-wire response before sending the file through for calibration.

On the dyno, power lifted from 59 kW to 68 kW at the wheels—modest, but the real story is torque nearly doubling from 105 Nm to 202 Nm. That's the sort of low-down grunt that matters when you're loaded up or working the vehicle hard off-road. Factory ECU calibration with 98 RON, tuned for closed-circuit and competition use.

Common questions
Why such a large jump in torque compared to power?

The L98 responds well to fuelling and boost improvements in the lower rev range where these engines spend most of their time. The factory tune is conservative, so once the hardware supports it, there's headroom to unlock usable torque without chasing top-end power.

What does Drive By Wire Optimization do on this platform?

It sharpens throttle response by adjusting the mapping between pedal input and actual throttle position. Particularly useful on older factory ECUs where the OEM calibration can feel sluggish under load.

Is this safe for a daily-driven Patrol?

This Stage 2 build is intended for off-road and closed-circuit competition use. The torque gain is substantial, so transmission, drivetrain condition, and cooling all need to be assessed by the installing workshop.
