Mercedes-AMG M177 / M178 Tuning & Calibration
The M177 and M178 are AMG's 4.0-litre 'hot-vee' biturbo V8 — the engine behind the C63, E63, GT and more. Huge torque, tight factory management, and real headroom for a developed calibration.
Mercedes-AMG M177 / M178 4.0L Twin-Turbo V8
The Mercedes-AMG M177 (in the C63, E63, GT 4-Door and others) and M178 (AMG GT) 4.0 twin-turbo V8 is calibrated with a custom OEM ECU file focused on boost control across the hot-vee turbos, fuelling, knock control and the torque model. Every file is developed from the stock read and validated against logged boost, fuel pressure and knock before sign-off.
What the Mercedes-AMG M177 / M178 needs from a calibration
The M177 and M178 — AMG's 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with the turbochargers nestled in the 'hot vee' between the cylinder banks — power the C63, E63, GT and GT 4-Door families. It's a torque-rich, strong engine with meaningful headroom once the calibration is developed properly.
Boost control is the core work. The two turbos are calibrated to deliver a clean, held boost curve, coordinated with AMG's torque model so the ECU delivers the power rather than trimming it back. Fuelling is set to the fuel system's real headroom and verified on fuel pressure, with knock control proven on logged data.
Because these are high-value engines, the discipline matters as much as the result: the factory's protection strategies are kept intact and every step is validated on logs rather than pushed blind. Done as engineering, the 4.0 biturbo makes a strong, repeatable step befitting the platform.
What we calibrate it on
Custom OEM ECU calibration
The AMG factory ECU read and developed into a custom file — boost, fuelling, knock and torque management.
Datalog review
Boost, fuel-pressure and knock logs reviewed so the calibration is verified before full load.
What the work concentrates on
Hot-vee boost control
The two turbos calibrated to deliver a clean, held boost curve, coordinated with AMG's torque model so the power is delivered, not trimmed.
Fuelling
Fuelling calibrated to the fuel system's real headroom and verified on logged fuel pressure for a strong, safe top end.
Torque management
AMG's torque model calibrated so the ECU allows the boost and torque the build makes across the range.
Knock control
Timing verified against logged knock so the calibration is safe and repeatable on the fuel the car runs.
Where the Mercedes-AMG M177 / M178 catches workshops out
Torque model limiting the tune
AMG manages torque tightly. The torque model and boost targets are calibrated together so the engine makes and keeps the power, verified on logs.
Fuel pressure at high output
High-output maps stress the fuel system. Fuelling is calibrated to real headroom and confirmed on logged fuel pressure so it doesn't lean out.
Heat and knock in the hot vee
The between-banks turbo layout runs hot. Timing and fuelling are verified on logged knock and temperature so the calibration stays safe under sustained load.

Mercedes-AMG M177 / M178 calibration — questions workshops ask
Which cars use the M177 and M178?
The M177 powers the C63, E63, GT 4-Door and related AMG models; the M178 is the AMG GT sports-car version of the same 4.0 twin-turbo V8. We calibrate both as custom OEM files.
How is the calibration developed?
From your vehicle's stock ECU read and logged data — boost, fuel pressure and knock — with AMG's protection strategies kept intact. It's measured, validated work for a high-value engine.
Is the stock fuel system enough?
For strong pump-fuel power it usually has headroom; we calibrate fuelling to its real limit and verify on logged fuel pressure, and advise if the build needs supporting work.
Does the car need to come to you?
No. Your workshop reads the ECU and logs the car; we develop and validate the calibration from your data. You keep the customer relationship.
