Toyota HiLux Diesel Tuning & Calibration
The HiLux is Australia's workhorse, and its 1KD and 1GD diesels tour, tow and work for a living. Response and reliability here are calibration — with exhaust temperature as the limit that matters.
Toyota HiLux 3.0L 1KD-FTV & 2.8L 1GD-FTV Turbo-Diesel
The Toyota HiLux 1KD-FTV (3.0L) and 1GD-FTV (2.8L) turbo-diesels are calibrated with a custom diesel file focused on EGT-safe fuelling, towing and throttle response, and boost and rail-pressure control — with the DPF strategy handled for off-road use on the 1GD. Every calibration is developed from the stock read and validated against logged exhaust temperature, boost and rail data, because on a working diesel EGT is the safety limit.
What the Toyota HiLux Diesel needs from a calibration
The 1KD-FTV (3.0-litre) and the later 1GD-FTV (2.8-litre) are the common-rail diesels that power the HiLux across the touring, towing and trade market. Owners want response off idle, comfortable towing and an engine that lasts — a different brief to a performance build, and one calibration answers well.
On a diesel that works and tows, exhaust gas temperature is the limit that matters. Add fuel without managing EGT and you get a strong-feeling tune that quietly cooks the engine under load. A proper HiLux calibration shapes fuelling and response around safe exhaust temperature, verified on logged EGT — not assumed from a map.
Boost and rail-pressure control, throttle response and, on DPF-equipped 1GD trucks, the particulate-filter strategy are coordinated together. The 1KD also has known cooling and, on some builds, head considerations, so a conservative, validated calibration protects it. Done as engineering, the HiLux pulls cleanly, tows confidently and runs cool.
What we calibrate it on
Custom diesel calibration
Bench or OBD-read 1KD/1GD ECU developed into a custom file — EGT-safe fuelling, response and boost control.
Datalog review
EGT, boost and rail-pressure logs reviewed to verify the calibration is safe under real towing load.
What the work concentrates on
EGT-safe fuelling
Fuelling shaped around safe exhaust gas temperature under load — the limit that protects a working diesel, verified on logged EGT.
Towing & throttle response
Response off idle and through the mid-range calibrated for towing and touring, not just a peak number on a free pull.
Boost & rail-pressure control
Boost and rail pressure coordinated with fuelling so the engine pulls cleanly and predictably under sustained load.
DPF strategy (off-road, 1GD)
On DPF-equipped 1GD trucks, the particulate-filter strategy is handled for off-road and competition use as part of the calibration.
Where the Toyota HiLux Diesel catches workshops out
High EGT under towing load
An over-fuelled diesel runs dangerous exhaust temperatures towing up a hill. Fuelling is shaped around safe EGT and verified on logged data — not a dyno number.
1KD cooling and head considerations
The 3.0L 1KD rewards a conservative, validated calibration. Fuelling and EGT are kept in safe territory so the tune adds response without adding risk.
Soft throttle response
Response off idle is fuelling and boost calibration, not just more fuel. It's tuned for towing and touring drivability and verified on data.

Toyota HiLux Diesel calibration — questions workshops ask
Which HiLux engines do you tune?
The 3.0-litre 1KD-FTV and the 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV common-rail diesels. Each gets a custom file developed from its own stock read and validated on logged EGT, boost and rail data.
Is a HiLux tune safe for towing?
That's the whole point of doing it as calibration. Fuelling is shaped around safe exhaust gas temperature under load and verified on logged EGT, so the truck makes its response and torque without cooking itself towing.
Do you handle the DPF on the 1GD?
The particulate-filter strategy is handled as part of the calibration for off-road and competition use, coordinated with fuelling and boost. Emissions hardware stays fitted on road-registered vehicles.
What do you need from my workshop?
The stock ECU read plus data logs — exhaust temperature, boost and rail pressure under real load. We develop and validate the calibration from that and revise until it's confirmed safe and stable.

Your workshop reads the ECU and logs the car; we develop and validate the calibration from your data. See real Toyota results in the Toyota tune archive. Calibrations are for off-road, competition and towing use; accounts are manually reviewed.
