ECU Bench Unlock

Late-model ECUs ship tuning-locked from the factory — nothing can be written until the protection is removed on the bench. We unlock them so they can be tuned: a standard tier, and a boot-method tier for newer ECUs. Common on late-model BMW.

The Service

The prerequisite before a locked ECU can be tuned

Manufacturers now protect ECUs against calibration writes. Until that protection is removed on the bench, no tune — ours or anyone's — can be written to the vehicle. Send us the ECU, we unlock it and return it ready for calibration. The unlock is a prerequisite, not a tune: it changes nothing about how the car drives.

Standard See product page — ECUs not requiring a boot method. Approved trade accounts see trade pricing at login.
Boot method See product page — newer ECUs (typically 2020-on) requiring board-level access. Trade pricing at login.

Courier both ways and transit insurance are not included and are your responsibility. Unsure which tier your ECU needs? Order with your VIN — we confirm the correct method before work begins and adjust or refund if it differs.

How It Works

Remove, ship, unlock, tune

1

Order with your VIN

Your VIN and vehicle details identify the ECU family and the correct unlock method before it's on the bench.

2

Remove & courier

You (or your workshop) remove the ECU and ship it to us — insured, we strongly recommend.

3

Bench unlock

We remove the factory tuning protection — standard or boot-mode as your ECU requires.

4

Return, ready to tune

The ECU comes back unlocked and ready for calibration — by us or the tuner of your choice.

Risks — Read Before Booking

What you're accepting, plainly

  • Transit is your risk. Courier charges both ways and transit insurance are excluded and yours to arrange. The ECU is in the courier's hands, not ours — we accept no liability for loss or damage in transit. Insure it.
  • Bench work carries inherent risk. Boot-method procedures are board-level and inherently higher-risk than standard unlocks, particularly on aged or previously repaired hardware.
  • Removal & refit are on you. Correct removal, handling and refitting of the ECU in the vehicle remain your (or your workshop's) responsibility.
  • An unlock is not a tune. It makes the ECU tunable; it changes nothing about performance by itself.
  • Accurate VIN required. The unlock method is chosen from your exact vehicle/ECU — a wrong VIN risks the wrong method and delays.

You acknowledge these risks at checkout — it's a condition of the service.
