Supra MK2 — Stage 2 ECU Tune
- 19% increase in peak power output
- 28% increase in torque delivery
- Improved throttle response via drive-by-wire
- Enhanced fuel system efficiency
- Optimized boost pressure control
- Better low-end and mid-range performance
This MK2 Supra came in as a Haltech conversion project, retaining the stock 5M-GE inline-six but with injectors, high pressure fuel pump, and drive-by-wire throttle integration to modernise the package. The factory naturally aspirated lump put down 72.3 kW at the wheels before we touched it.
The Stage 2 file focused on fuel and ignition optimisation for 98 RON, with attention to the revised injector flow and drive-by-wire mapping. Final result was 86 kW and 152 Nm at the wheels, a 13.7 kW lift. Not a monster by modern standards, but the Haltech platform gives the owner clean fuelling, proper closed-loop control, and the flexibility to log and tweak as needed.
These older inline-sixes respond well to careful ignition timing once the fuel delivery is sorted. The workshop supplied dyno sheets showing smooth torque delivery through the mid-range, which is what you want from a street-driven classic.
Why fit a Haltech to a naturally aspirated 5M-GE?
The Haltech setup replaces ageing factory electronics and opens the door for accurate fuel and ignition control, plus data logging and diagnostics that simply weren't available in 1985. It also future-proofs the car for any mild forced induction work down the track.
What does Stage 2 include on this platform?
Stage 2 here covers the ECU tune plus supporting hardware: upgraded injectors, high pressure fuel pump, drive-by-wire throttle integration, and refinement of fuelling and ignition maps for 98 RON.
Is 86 kW at the wheels typical for a stock-capacity 5M-GE?
Yes, with basic bolt-ons and a proper tune on 98 RON. The original 72.3 kW baseline suggests the engine was healthy but running rich or retarded on the old ECU. The 13.7 kW gain reflects better fuel delivery and timing optimisation.
