This E34 535i has been converted to a full standalone setup running E85, with a turbo conversion built around solid bottom-end prep and a robust fuelling package. The M30 was fitted with upgraded head hardware and ignition, then paired with a mid-frame turbo running 1.24 bar through the Megasquirt ECU.
The result is 309 kilowatts at the wheels, up from 225 kilowatts baseline, with the torque spread suited to off-road and circuit use. E85 provides the octane ceiling and charge cooling needed at this boost level, and the Megasquirt platform gave us the resolution to dial in timing and fuelling across the load range without compromise.
Calibration focused on safe closed-loop AFR control under boost, progressive timing advance, and maintaining cylinder pressure within sensible limits for a built but still iron-block straight six.
Why Megasquirt for this M30 turbo build?
Megasquirt offers full user control over fuelling, timing, and boost, which is essential when converting a naturally aspirated M30 to forced induction on E85. The factory Motronic system has no provision for this level of modification.
What does the 1.24 bar boost figure represent?
That's the peak boost pressure recorded during the dyno session. It's a safe working pressure for a built M30 on E85 with proper head hardware and ignition support.
Is this calibration specific to E85 only?
Yes. The tune is calibrated for E85 fuel. Running 98 RON or any other fuel will cause unsafe conditions and engine damage.
