Commodore VE — Stage 2 ECU Tune
- 44% power increase
- 31% torque increase
- Improved power delivery across rev range
- Enhanced torque characteristics
- Optimized fuel mapping for 98 RON
- Boost control refinement
The factory L98 responds well when you open up the induction and exhaust. This VE got the full treatment: 234/250 cam at 0.50 lift, head port work, headers and a full system, then ditched the MAF for an open-air intake. Factory ECU handled it without complaint once the calibration caught up.
Workshop dyno figures came back at 204 kW and 394 Nm at the wheels, up from 141.7 kW and 301 Nm stock. The extra 62.3 kW makes itself known from mid-range onward. We dialled the fuelling and ignition to suit 98 RON and the freer-breathing setup.
Stage 2 for the L98 platform is reliable territory when the hardware's matched properly. This one ticks the boxes without asking the motor to do anything silly.
Does the factory ECU cope with the MAFless intake and cam changes?
Yes. The factory ECU can be recalibrated for speed-density operation once the MAF sensor is removed. Fuelling and ignition maps are rewritten to suit the cam profile and increased airflow from the intake and head work.
What sort of gain can I expect from this level of work on an L98 VE?
This example made 204 kW at the wheels from 141.7 kW stock, a gain of 62.3 kW. Torque lifted from 301 Nm to 394 Nm. Results will vary with dyno type and specific component choices, but the ballpark holds with similar hardware.
Is 98 RON required for this tune?
Yes. The calibration is written for 98 RON minimum to take advantage of the ignition timing headroom these modifications allow.
