Commodore VE — Stage 1 ECU & TCU Tune
- 6% power increase to 247kW
- 4% torque increase to 456Nm
- Optimized boost control
- Enhanced fuel system management
- Improved drive-by-wire response
- Wastegate solenoid tuning
The L98 VE responds well to basic bolt-ons and a proper retune. This 2009 example came in with over-the-rail intake, extractors, and a full exhaust—fairly typical for an owner chasing a bit more driveability without touching internals.
The Factory ECU calibration was revised to suit the improved breathing and 98 RON, while the TCU side received attention to firm up shifts and better support the revised torque curve. Result was 247 kW at the wheels, up from 234 kW, and torque lifted from 438 Nm to 456 Nm.
Not a huge jump on paper, but the mid-range is noticeably fatter and the auto shifts with more intent. Solid outcome for a Stage 1 street car that still runs cats and sees daily use.
Does the VE L98 need supporting mods for a Stage 1 tune?
No hardware changes are strictly required, but this example had intake, extractors, and exhaust already fitted. You'll see the best return with at least some breathing improvements and premium fuel.
What does the TCU tune actually change on these?
Shift points, pressure, and torque management are adjusted to suit the revised engine calibration. The result is firmer, more responsive shifts that support the extra torque without slipping or hunting.
Are these figures at the hubs or on a chassis dyno?
These are wheel figures as recorded by the workshop on their dyno. Factory ECU platform, 98 RON pump fuel.
