Commodore VS — Stage 3 ECU Tune
- 72% increase in power output to 252kW
- 36% increase in torque to 590Nm
- Improved boost control management via turbo integration
- Enhanced fuel system with high pressure injection
- Optimised ignition timing for forced induction
- Precision engine management calibration via Haltech ECU
This 1996 VS Commodore runs a mild ported 355 stroker with a rear mount GT42 pulsar turbo pushing 1.4 bar. The Haltech setup manages flex fuel operation across E85 and 98, with drive-by-wire integration and a single ice ignition coil with amplifier triggered through MSD and home pickups. Solid flat tappet cams spec'd at 244-248 @ 0.50 keep the valve events where they need to be for boost response.
The file was built for off-road and closed-circuit use. Workshop dyno results show 252 kilowatts at the wheels with 590 newton-metres, up from 127 kilowatts and 343 newton-metres. The high pressure fuel pump and wastegate solenoid give the Haltech enough headroom to keep the motor safe when the ethanol content swings between fills.
Why flex fuel on a stroker 304 combo?
E85 tolerates more timing and runs cooler under boost than 98 alone, which helps keep a mild ported motor safe at 1.4 bar. The Haltech switches maps based on ethanol content, so the owner can fill with whatever's available without retuning.
How does the rear mount turbo setup affect spool?
The GT42 is a larger frame turbo, so rear mounting adds exhaust volume before the turbine. Spool is later than a front mount, but the trade-off is easier packaging and less underbonnet heat on a street-driven car.
What does drive-by-wire integration do on a VS?
The Haltech takes over throttle control from the factory cable. This allows the calibration to manage torque requests, traction strategies, and boost ramp rates electronically rather than relying on the driver's foot alone.
