Sometimes a build is about making an honest street car feel sharper rather than chasing dyno heroes. This 2012 VE Commodore came in with headers, full exhaust, and a cat fitted, and the factory ECU needed to make sense of the extra flow.
The result was 223 kW and 420 Nm at the wheels on 98 RON — modest gains on paper, but the real improvement is in how the L98 pulls through the midrange and cleans up fuelling now that the calibration matches the hardware. The customer supplied dyno figures showing 3 kW and 12 Nm over stock.
No dramas, no fuss. Just a properly sorted street car that breathes better and drives the way it should have from the start.
Why such a small power gain for Stage 2?
The L98 is a decent motor from the factory and responds well to breathing mods, but it's naturally aspirated — you're working with airflow and timing, not boost. The 12 Nm torque lift and cleaner fuel delivery are where the real-world benefit sits.
Does the factory ECU handle exhaust mods well?
It can, but it needs recalibration to account for changes in backpressure and oxygen sensor readings. Without it, you'll often see part-throttle fuelling issues and the car won't take full advantage of the freer-flowing exhaust.
Is this tune safe for daily driving on pump 98?
Yes. The calibration is written for 98 RON pump fuel and suits normal street use. No special fuel required, no track-only conditions.
