Nissan VR38DETT Tuning & Calibration
The VR38 is the R35 GT-R's twin-turbo V6 — a factory supercar engine with enormous headroom and a transmission that has to be tuned with it. This is precision calibration on a high-value platform.
Nissan VR38DETT 3.8L Twin-Turbo V6 (R35 GT-R)
The Nissan VR38DETT (R35 GT-R) is calibrated on ECUtek — the R35 platform standard — focused on twin-turbo boost control, fuelling for E85 or pump, knock control, and GR6 dual-clutch transmission tuning so the gearbox handles the torque. Every file is developed from the stock read and validated against logged boost, fuel pressure, knock and transmission data.
What the Nissan VR38DETT needs from a calibration
The VR38DETT — the 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 in the R35 GT-R — is a hand-built factory supercar engine with genuine headroom. The strong bottom end and twin turbos take large power on the stock block with supporting fuel and cooling, which is why the R35 aftermarket is so deep and why calibration defines the result.
Boost and fuelling are the core work, and both scale hard with E85 — the VR38 makes its big numbers on ethanol with the fuel system to match. Boost is calibrated across the twin turbos to land and hold, fuelling to the system's real headroom, and knock control proven on logged data on what is a very expensive engine to get wrong.
The GR6 dual-clutch transaxle is as central as the engine. On a high-power R35 the GR6 must be calibrated with the engine — clutch pressure, torque limits and launch/shift behaviour — or it becomes the weak link. Treated as one system and validated on data, the VR38 delivers the R35's signature all-weather pace, repeatably.
What we calibrate it on
ECUtek
The R35 standard — full boost, fuel, knock and GR6 transmission control on the factory ECU with deep logging.
Standalone ECU
For extreme R35 builds, a standalone gives complete control of fuel, spark and boost.
Datalog review
Boost, fuel-pressure, knock and transmission logs reviewed so the VR38 file is verified before full load.
What the work concentrates on
Twin-turbo boost control
Boost calibrated across the twin turbos to land and hold on target — the difference between strong, clean power and a spike.
E85 & fuelling
Fuelling calibrated to the fuel system's real headroom for E85 or pump, verified on logged fuel pressure — the VR38 thrives on ethanol.
GR6 transmission tuning
Clutch pressure, torque limits and launch/shift behaviour in the GR6 dual-clutch calibrated to handle the torque instead of becoming the weak link.
Knock control
Timing verified against logged knock so the calibration is safe and repeatable on an engine that is expensive to get wrong.
Where the Nissan VR38DETT catches workshops out
GR6 slip or overheat at power
The transaxle gives power back and heats up if left stock on a high-power build. Clutch pressure, torque limits and shifts are calibrated with the engine.
Fuel system headroom on E85
Big VR38 power needs the fuel system to keep up. Fuelling is calibrated to real headroom and confirmed on logged fuel pressure so it doesn't lean out.
Boost coordination across the twins
The two turbos must deliver together. Boost is calibrated to land and hold cleanly and trimmed on logged target-vs-actual.

Nissan VR38DETT calibration — questions workshops ask
What do you tune the R35 on?
ECUtek — the R35 platform standard, with full boost, fuel, knock and GR6 transmission control on the factory ECU and the logging depth to validate it. Standalone for extreme builds.
Do you tune the GR6 gearbox too?
Yes. On a high-power R35 the GR6 dual-clutch must be calibrated with the engine — clutch pressure, torque limits and shift/launch behaviour — or it becomes the weak link.
How much does E85 help the VR38?
A lot, for a power build — the VR38 makes its big numbers on ethanol with a matched fuel system. We calibrate fuelling for the ethanol content and verify on logged fuel pressure.
Does the car need to come to you?
No. Your workshop reads the ECU and logs the car; we develop and validate the VR38 calibration from your data. You keep the customer relationship.
