This 2017 Focus XR5 was built for competition use with a complete fuel system overhaul and a high-flow turbo to take full advantage of E85. The factory 2.5-litre five-cylinder responds well to ethanol content, and with the supporting hardware in place, we calibrated for 230 kW at the wheels and 370 Nm.
The fuel system upgrade was non-negotiable here—E85 demands significantly more volume than pump 98, and the high-flow turbo adds its own requirements. Calibration focused on maintaining safe AFRs under load while extracting the octane advantage ethanol offers. Result is a proper circuit-focused front-driver with usable midrange and clean top-end delivery.
Why E85 for this platform?
E85 offers excellent knock resistance and cooling properties, both critical when running higher boost on the upgraded turbo. It also supports more aggressive timing advance than 98 RON.
What does 'complete fuel system upgrade' typically include on these?
Generally means pump, lines, rail, and injectors sized to flow sufficient volume for E85 at the target power level. These five-cylinders need proper fuel delivery to stay safe under load.
Is this suitable for street use?
This calibration is intended for off-road and closed-circuit competition use. E85 availability and the aggressive turbo setup make it better suited to track work than daily driving.
